The Election of Lincoln
Why was is a cause?
As you know Lincoln ran for president and ended up winning. Lincoln believed in anti-slavery and also thought that the national government should hold supreme power. This resulted in the south becoming angry because of what Lincoln thought. They were afriad that his thoughts would reuslt in changes they wouldn't like (such as abolishing slavery and getting giving supreme power to the federal government. This made the south angry and afraid what might happen in the future. At this point the south had enough and decided something needed to change.
Lincoln/Douglas Debate
Before Lincoln became president, he ran for senator against Stephen Douglas. Lincoln actually lost. Although this seems like a bad thing, it actually benefited him. If he would have won, he couldn't have run for president later on. If he wouldn't have run for president, he wouldn't have partially caused The Civil War.

Stephen Douglas
Douglas really wanted to win his election for senator. Little did he know that he actually benefitted Lincoln. During the election for senator, LIncoln and Douglas had many debates. If it wasn't for these debates, Lincoln's name wouldn't have gotten out. Therefore, people wouldn't have known how anti-slavery Lincoln was.
Lincoln's Campaign for President
Speak, speak, speak, speak, speak. In order to become president, Lincoln had to debate and speak over and over again. In this process, Lincoln made sure people knew that he was against slavery. This might be the reason why Lincoln foscused on campaigning in the north and west. His campaigning sure made people know that slavery had to go!
